If you are concerned about the color of your teeth, there are natural substances that can be used to help remove discoloration. Here are a few:

Baking Soda

Baking soda, which is the white, alkaline substance that is used in baking recipes, is also a teeth-brightening agent. Baking soda can be applied to the teeth with your tooth brush to remove surface stains by polishing them away.

The powder, which has a mildly abrasive texture, can be mixed with water to form a loose paste that can be used in the same manner as traditional toothpaste. However, it is important not to use too much vigor when brushing with baking soda. In addition, you should not brush with the paste more than a couple of times per week. Abrasive substances can damage tooth enamel if proper care is not observed.

Sesame Oil

Sesame oil as well as other natural edible oils can be swished around your mouth to whiten your teeth. The process, which is called oil pulling, is an old Indian practice.

To try oil pulling, choose a natural oil that you find palatable, such a s sesame oil, coconut oil or olive oil. Place about a tablespoon of the oil in your mouth and move it about as you would mouthwash. Continue to swish with the oil until you feel the need to spit it out. The longer the oil is moved about the mouth, the more oral bacteria becomes trapped in the liquid.

In addition, never swallow the used oil since it contains thousands of trapped contaminants from your mouth. You should also be careful not to aspirate the oil as you swish it about, since oil can cause health problems when it enters the lungs.

During oil pulling, the oil removes yellowing plaque from the teeth and helps dissolve oil-based stains from the tooth enamel.

Turmeric

Turmeric can also be used to remove dental staining. The powder, which is bright yellow in color, can be added to moistened toothbrush bristles, or you can make a paste of the turmeric by adding water. Brush with the turmeric as you would with conventional toothpaste, but be careful. Although turmeric can help lighten tooth enamel, it can stain skin, counter tops and clothing.

There are multiple natural substances that can help whiten your teeth. However, they may not be as fast or effective as a professional whitening application. To have your teeth professionally whitened, schedule an appointment with a dental clinic, such as the Nittany Dental Associates.
