Having braces often results in mixed emotions. You're excited that when your braces session is complete, you will have nice, straight teeth. You're also a bit annoyed at the inconveniences you have to go through in the meantime while the braces are in place. These annoyances can be especially pronounced when you are an adult with braces. However, the following are some tips you can adhere to in order to make life easier as an adult with braces.

1. Find an orthodontist you can talk to easily.

There are many orthodontists out there, but they all have different personalities. You might get along great with orthodontist X, while a friend gets along better with orthodontist Y. The trick is to hire an orthodontist who makes you feel comfortable and who answers your questions in a manner you can understand. This way, you won't dread your braces appointments as much, and you will have an easier time getting any problems that occur during your treatment period addressed.

2. Learn to brush off people's comments.

As much as you might hope friends and coworkers won't notice your braces, they will. Many people will ask you about your braces or make comments about them. You'll have an easier time dealing with this if you learn to brush off these comments early on. You may want to formulate some generic responses to give whenever you're asked about your braces. This will save you time and energy in the long run.

3. Don't be afraid to take pain relievers.

Braces can be more uncomfortable when you're an adult than when you are a child. Your bones are harder, and shifting your teeth is a little harder as a result. Do not be afraid to take pain relievers when the aches and pains start interfering with your daily life. Especially after you have your braces tightened, a dose of ibuprofen or naproxen may make it a lot easier to get through the work day without constantly thinking about your mouth.

4. Pay close attention to dental hygiene.

One of the struggles of living with braces is keeping your teeth clean with the braces in place. If you do not do a great job of cleaning your teeth, you may end up with tooth decay and cavities. No matter how busy you might be, make sure you set aside time to brush your teeth really, really well twice a day. Also use a mouthwash to help kill germs in any areas you might miss when brushing. You may want to carry a toothbrush and mouthwash with you in your purse or bag so that if some food gets caught in your braces, you can easily remove it at work.

5. Find healthy, braces-friendly foods.

As an adult, you are probably well aware that you need to eat healthy foods in order to feel your best. This can be tough with braces, since many fruits and vegetables are tough to chew. So, make a list of healthy foods you can enjoy with braces, and make a point of purchasing them every week. Pack your lunch so you always have something healthy on hand and are not tempted to eat a burger for lunch because it's the only thing on the menu you can chew.

Follow the tips above to make life with braces easier. Keep in mind that most adults need to wear braces for more than a year, so it's important to establish good habits early on and stick with them throughout your treatment period. Talk to your orthodontist for more advice or information about any lingering concerns you may have.
